Rockdale County, Georgia is requesting Byrne-Justice Assistance Grant funds to support and enhance law enforcement programs.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is proposing to augment our traffic enforcement capabilities with the purchase of two “police edition” motorcycles. The growth of Rockdale County in recent years has contributed to traffic congestion and the need for specialized traffic enforcement. The county population has increased from 70,111 in the year 2000 to 84,569 (estimated) in 2009. Traffic concerns and the need for specialized traffic enforcement have increased, as well. Motorcycles are considered an asset in traffic enforcement because of their fuel efficiency, as well as their ability to move through congested traffic to roadway emergency scenes quicker.
Budget constraints have prevented the purchase of motorcycles for several years. The Sheriff’s Office expects to purchase two fully-equipped police edition motorcycles with the $38,490 Byrne-JAG grant allocation.
Several deputies have already been trained in the operation of these specialized vehicles. No additional personnel will be required to operate the vehicles. No other related justice funding will be required for operation of the motorcycles. Any additional equipment required, such as helmets, will be provided through the Sheriff’s Office operating budget.
Rockdale County utilizes a detailed financial process to track and record requisitions, purchases, acquisitions, and payments. Grant funds are drawn down electronically through the Department of Finance, and are kept separate from local or other funding.
