Sheriff Jeff Wigington formed the elite SWAT team in January, 1999. Due to the county’s rapid growth, the Sheriff felt it necessary to form a specialized unit to resolve high-risk situations. We believe that a well-managed team response to a critical incident usually results in a successful resolution. The main objective of the team is to take control of a situation in which the life of a deputy or citizen may be in jeopardy. This team is made up of dedicated deputies who have volunteered for the position. Each team member was required to pass an oral interview, psychological testing, firearms testing and physical fitness evaluation. These individuals are highly motivated and maintain a higher degree of physical conditioning, training and preparation. Our training consists of physical preparation, firearms and mock scenarios. The training becomes very intense during the scenarios, for we know that during real situations there are no second chances or “time outs.”
